Professor Fred Bender, a member of the April 2007 EcoRes Forum E-Conference Panel of Experts, is well-known for his ecocentric approach to philosophical debate and ecological issues. Bender, an alumnus of Northwestern University, now serves as a Professor of Philosophy at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, where he specializes in ecological philosophy, Asian philosophical traditions, Marxism and critical theory.
Of his numerous publications, Bender’s The Culture Of Extinction: Toward A Philosophy Of Deep Ecology, in which he discusses the deep ecology Apron Diagram and the ideas of ecosophy, will be of particular interest to e-conference participants. Bender’s position is that only “an ecocentric perspective and attendant activism would be adequate to confront the serious environmental issues we now face locally, nationally, and globally,” and accordingly, that “only a change of ecological consciousness offers the best route to environmental responsibility”.
This view has led to Bender’s ongoing dialogue with Professor Wendy Lynne Lee, proponent of a “radically reconstructed, anthropocentrically focused ecological feminism”, based on the idea that “while we cannot alter what is a fundamentally human consciousness, we can create the conditions for a radical change of consciousness”. This debate, which is being held in public fora around the USA, will be presented in the upcoming EcoRes Forum.
The EcoRes Forum is delighted to welcome Professor Fred Bender to the April E-Conference Panel of Experts and wishes to recognize his contributions in the field of ecological philosophy.
