Long-time champion for sustainable use of the biosphere, John Cairns, Jr. has left his indelible mark on many fields, from his chosen academic focus of ecotoxicology to environmental education and advocacy. In 2003 Cairns crowned his lifelong work and vision with the concept he called “Sustainability Ethics”, a term now known and used in both academic and activist communities.
Author of over 1,520 publications, Cairns believes that all humans should be involved in what he has termed the “quest for sustainability”, a conviction that has led him to provide significant works through open-access platforms, and has prompted his participation in the EcoRes Forum. Cairns’ open access anthologies Goals and Conditions for a Sustainable World and Eco-Ethics and Sustainability Ethics, which are available for download free of charge at www.johncairns.net/archived_papers.htm, are used extensively in university classrooms around the world. |

“Cairns received the PhD and MS from the University of Pennsylvania, an AB from Swarthmore College and completed a postdoctoral course in isotope methodology at Hahnemann Medical College, Philadelphia. He was Curator of Limnology at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia for 18 years and has taught at various universities and field stations. Professional certifications include Qualified Fishery Administrator by the American Fisheries Society, Senior Ecologist by the Ecological Society of America, and the Academy of Board Certified Environmental Professionals.
