Ecology, marine biology

Lev Fishelson, Professor Emeritus at the Department of Zoology, Faculty of Life Sciences, Tel Aviv University, brings a lifetime’s wealth of experience and knowledge to the April EcoRes Forum E-Conference.

Known for his discipline-crossing interest in the relationship between humanity and the ecosphere in which life exists, Fishelson has spoken widely on the value of sound environmental education, sustainable use of global resources, and the potential role of what he refers to as "pragmatic planning" in terms of population growth.

After obtaining a M.Sc. degree at Tel Aviv University (1959) and his Ph.D. at the Jerusalem-Hebrew University and University of Tuebingen, Germany (1966), Fishelson went on to achieve well-deserved global recognition for his work in the fields of marine biology and ecology. Tel Aviv University (1986-1991).

Author of over 200 publications, Fishelson’s distinctions are many and diverse, and include a variety of species named in his honor, such as Lichomolgus fishelsoni and Cosmina fishelsoni. Fishelson himself discovered Epulopiscium fishelsoni, the giant bacterium living in the guts of fish. Additional honors include: Plaque of Distinction, Minister of Environment; Honorary Doctorate at RAU-Johannesburg, South Africa; Silver Medal, Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Germany; Honorary Fellow of Interuniversity Institute in Eilat; Honorary Fellow, Israel Ecological Society; Honorary Fellow, Israel Zoological Society; and Member of the Academy of Science, Erfort, Germany.
