FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

EcoRes Forum Spotlight: John Lemons
    John Lemons, Ph.D.

Professor of Biology and Environmental Science, Department of Environmental Studies
University of New England
Biddeford, ME, USA

Environmental studies, Biology

Conservation policy expert John Lemons is widely recognized for his interdisciplinary work in the fields of environmental studies, protection, and legislation and the biological foundations of these domains.

As a young man Lemons received his graduate education in zoology and physiology at the University of Wyoming, which since led him to the University of New England’s Department of Environmental Studies. Lemons has been deeply involved as a principle researcher on UNEP biodiversity projects where, from 2000–2005, he directed the international project Best Practices for the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Biodiversity of Global Significance in Arid and Semiarid Zones.

Lemons’s growing concern about the ethical aspects of climate change and their all-too-often exclusion from decision-making fora has prompted his involvement with the Collaborative Program on the Ethical Dimensions of Climate Change (EDCC), through the Rock Ethics Institute at Pennsylvania State University. Cooperating with similarly concerned colleagues around the globe, Lemons is one of 25 authors on the UN "White Paper on the Ethical Dimensions of Climate Change", which made headlines when presented by lead author Don Brown at the November COP gathering in Nairobi.

Author of over 100 publications including Sustainable Development: Science, Ethics, and Public Policy and Scientific Uncertainty and Environmental Problem Solving, Lemons’s writings have spanned the topics of global climate change, environmental legislation, sustainable development, American national park management and preservation, the vital role of science and ethics in policy and decision-making, and much more.

The EcoRes Forum is proud to welcome Professor John Lemons to the April E-Conference Panel of Experts and wishes to recognize his outstanding efforts on behalf of environmental ethics and policy and his role as champion of the American national park system.
